Unusual Usages For Decorative Bird Cages

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

Decorative bird cages seem to be going through a period of renaissance. The normal use of these cages is to display them as artwork – much like you might want to display pieces of sculpture. But some homeowners see additional usages for these cages.

One of the more unusually uses of decorative bird cages is for the holding of fake birds. Some people love birds, but they don’t want the responsibility of caring for and feeding them. As a compromise, some of these people will buy one or more  decorative bird cages and then populate them with fake stuffed birds.

While it may seem a bit odd, some of these arrangements look very beautiful and easily qualify as a form of artwork itself.

Rotating You Backyard Bird Feeding Choices

Friday, May 21st, 2010

It is usually a good idea to rotate the backyard bird feeding food choices that you offer them. Although, not strictly necessary, this helps to keep food boredom from setting in as they begin to anticipate what might be new at the feeder.

A bird feeding station is most helpful to birds in cold winters where, many times, they are struggling to survive. In fact, many bird families would not survive without these feeders.

But bird feeders also come in handy in the spring and summer months. Especially if you are in a part of the country where draughts are common and the natural food sources for birds are hard to find.

The truth is that bird feeders do a lot of good in preserving the health and viability of birds as their natural ecosystems gradually disappear.

Why Finches Need large Cages

Saturday, May 8th, 2010

Finches also love company, which is why when people buy them for pets, they usually get more than one. They are also communal birds and, except when they are nesting, love the company of other finches.

That’s why finch bird cages should have plenty of roaming around room inside. They should have room not just for themselves, but for their companions as well.

Unlike other species of birds that can get their exercise by climbing their cages and playing with their toys, finches get their exercise almost exclusively from flying about. If they don’t have room in the cage to fly, they will basically not be able to exercise. If you have to make a choice between high and wide, choose the wide cages. This gives them plenty of room to fly horizontally.

Types of Parakeet Bird Cages To Avoid

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

The construction of the bird cage that you choose is of great importance to the health and welfare of your bird friend. So be sure to select the right cage from the outset.

Avoid parakeet bird cages made of wood, bamboo, and the like. Parakeets love to chew on these materials and before you know it, they will have escaped their cage. A much better choice is to choose a cage made of metal or wire. The nice thing about metal is that it’s easy to keep clean and sanitized.

They are also much harder for the bird to destroy. Parakeets make great pets, but if you want to keep them happy, give them nice surroundings to live in. That’s why it’s worth taking the time of choosing appropriate parakeet bird cages for them.

Lovebird Cages – How Big Should They Be?

Friday, April 30th, 2010

Size is important when you are deciding on a cage for your lovebird. Lovebirds are very active creatures, they love exercise, and they love movement – so give it adequate living space to enjoy itself.

n general, the larger the cage (within reason) the better. Most experts suggest that a cage two feet high and 2 feet square should be about the smallest size considered when picking out a cage. Having large sized lovebird cages benefit you indirectly as well. It provides the birds with plenty of room to run around expending their energy therefore requiring less personal attention from you.

You also need a large sized cage for your lovebird because you will need room to place their toys. Lovebirds love toys and you don’t want their cage to seem crowded.

Why Choose a Platform Bird Feeder

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

Different types of bird feeders are produced to accommodate the various species of birds who like to feed in a variety of ways.

Many bird feeders have perches onto which birds can alight and feed. Some birds, however, do not like perches – or at least it is not their first choice. A platform bird feeder, unlike a window bird feeder, attracts lots of birds who like to feed while standing on a flat surface as opposed to a thin perch.

Unfortunately, these type of bird feeders are also attractive to varmints like squirrels who love the flat footing that a platform feeder provides for them. Therefore, if you do decide on a platform feeder you will have to figure a way to keep squirrels away.

Humming Bird Feeders

Sunday, April 25th, 2010

If hummingbirds are native to your location, attracting humming birds to your garden is not very difficult at all.

But, because there are so many different styles of humming bird feeders, it will probably take a while before the humming birds in your area actually recognize that the feeder contains food for them. If they hang around long enough, however, eventually their natural curiosity will lead them to discover it.

You can help them to discover it faster by placing ripened fruits near the feeder. This will attract flies and other small insects to the feeder which, in return, will attract humming birds since flies and small insects make up a large part of the humming bird’s diet. As they snack on the insects, they will, no doubt, discover your humming bird feeder as well.

Tube Bird Feeders

Friday, April 16th, 2010

Want to attract small birds to your garden but dissuade the larger ones? If so, the tube feeder may be the perfect type of feeder to place in your yard. Tube feeders have little short perches that allow small birds to perch on while having their meal.

Larger birds, however, cannot land on these short perches and end up having to go elsewhere for food. This makes tube bird feeders the perfect choice for homeowners who want to attract smaller birds to their yards, but not the larger species.

The most important thing about these feeders from the standpoint of the birds is that the food will fit through the holes at the feeding ports. So, when you purchase your foods, make sure that the holes in the ports are big enough to allow the food to slip through the ports.

Endangered Birds

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

Throughout the years, there have been several laws enacted to protect the lives of all kinds and species of animals whose habitats are being systematically destroyed by the actions of man. Some of the animals most in need of protection have been birds.

Endangered birds are those that are in danger of extinction. The danger may come from man or it may be natural causes. But, usually, endangered birds are endangered because of man destroying their native habitats. Experts list lost of habitat as the number one cause. Another reason for a decline of a bird species is the overuse of pesticides. Pesticides have been shown to cause the thinning of the eggshells in the eggs that birds lay – leaving many of their young to die before birth.

Normally, with other types of bird feeders you have to be concerned about squirrels stealing food from the feeder. But, if your window is high enough above the ground, not near any tree branches, and has no outside ledge, then your window bird feeder will be pretty much squirrel proof.

Most people select to place their window bird feeder in either the kitchen or bedroom. Both are ideal places for viewing your bird friends.

So when you choose a paint be sure that it is not a lead-based paint.  Using a good latex paint is fine.
