Eddie Ryan - Drum Maker For The Stars

Friday, June 2nd, 2006

I started working at the Boosey and Hawkes factory in Edgware, Middlesex when I left school in 1958.  I was an apprentice in the Drum Department making Ajax and Edgware drums and later Rogers drums (under licence).  Moved to the Boosey and Hawkes retail shop in Denman Street, Piccadilly where I did repairs in the basement, along with three other men, doing on the spot repairs.  This was mainly for musicians working in the theatres and clubs in the West End of London, as in those days, most theatres employed over twenty musicians.  Later on I moved upstairs to the sales department selling drums.

Beethoven’s Life

Wednesday, May 31st, 2006

Beethoven looked after his two younger brothers until his father’s death in 1792, when he at last was able to go to live in Vienna, one of the great centres of music at the time. Mozart, with whom he had wanted to study, had died, and so Beethoven happily took lessons in piano, counterpoint and composition from Hayden. His earlier works show detailed study of both composers, yet managed, even then, to go forward in the development of a new musical age.

An article about Creating MP3 Files from Analog

Converting CDs into MP3 files is an easy process because the audio stays in the digital domain. But what about old analog recordings like cassettes and records?

Although the procedure is slightly more complicated, converting other audio sources into MP3 files is a do-able task. How to Compress Audio

Saturday, May 20th, 2006

An article on how to compress audio

Luckily, there are many ways to compress digital data. Computer data files, for example, can be compressed with the popular ZIP format. The resulting zip file is usually much smaller than the original file and can be unzipped so that the original file is intact.

Compression formats which retain all of the original data are called ‘lossless’. Certain types of files like audio, video and graphics can also be compressed by discarding some of the original data. This form of compression is called ‘lossy’

Friday, May 12th, 2006

An Article About Mp3 Players Cheap:

Finding a decent MP3 player cheap was a difficult, if not impossible task just a few years ago, but then along came Apple with their spiffy little iPods. Of course, Apple iPods have their very own format that doesn’t work with MP3 music players, because Apple is just too trendy and hip to play along with others. Since these little iPods with their own Apple format are now dominating the market, it’s a piece of cake to get an MP3 player cheap.

Friday, May 12th, 2006

An Article About Mp3 Music Players:

Few things in my life do I use more often and enjoy than my mp3 music player. Well, maybe its not all that great, but I do really love the idea of mp3 music players. I’m so tired of CDs I could just scream. Sure, they’re way better than the different forms of music storage mediums that came before, but that’s not saying a whole lot. There’s nothing more frustrating than putting on your favorite CD only to hear it skip like crazy during the best songs.

Beethoven Symphonies

Thursday, May 11th, 2006

If you are learning to play the piano, the violin or indeed most instruments developed before 1827 you will no doubt have come across Beethoven. He’s a feature of many music examinations from the comparatively lowly Grade III to the lofty degree.

Beethoven’s sheets of music apparently covered his attic when he died, and therein must have been a treasure trove of unheard snippets of music, whole sonatas, later re-written and bits of symphonies. A wonder for the music historian to ponder over and put in place.

Ludwig Van Beethoven

Thursday, May 11th, 2006

If you turn on the TV in any country in the world, and listen for a while, you will hear a bit of Beethoven played. OK it may be a parody of it in a soap opera but the tunes written 200 years ago are still good today.

If you get Classic music from the UK on fm and the net you will know that every Easter a poll is taken of the 2 million or so listeners who decide which are the “top” 300 classical pieces of music that people want to listen to. Ludwig van Beethoven came second this year, with Mozart first. He would have been pleased if he was still alive, of course, because Mozart was his original inspiration.

What is Mp3?

Tuesday, May 9th, 2006

MP3 (MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3) is easily the most recognized digital file format. Almost everyone associates MP3 with music, and this recognition factor is due in large part to the music industry’s well-publicized legal battle against MP3 distribution. Even though there is a strong association between music and MP3, many people have no idea what MP3 actually is.

The old guy, traditional radio, has had his time. Now it’s time for Satellite Radio. Commercial free music, huge variety of channels, crystal clear sound with litte fading, no commercials (music), and you can listen to the same channel wherever you drive.

Did you know you can also get it in the home? Get it in your car and the home install (which is trivial) only adds a few bucks to the price. So we have both and love it.

Music Appreciation Class

Tuesday, May 2nd, 2006

While music genre generalizations are all very well and good for some people, there are others who have somewhat more discerning tastes and are looking for more. These are very often the people who appreciate music. It really does not matter what type of music you “like”, whether it’s rock, Baroque, rave or Ravel you do appreciate “your type of music”.

Alanis Morissette is a famous Canadian singer, composer, and actress, most famous for her chart-topping album ‘Jagged Little Pill’, which to date has sold over 30 million copies around the world.

She released three follow up albums, all of which have been huge successes, though none have sold as ‘Jagged Little Pill’.
Â

In the spring of 1995, Morissette signed on with Maverick Records, and ‘Jagged Little Pill’ was released. The album started off slowly, reaching 118 on the Billboard 200 chart, but when a LA DJ from a popular radio station came across one of the songs from the album he began playing it around the clock.Â

The song was ‘You Oughta Know’, and its sudden popularity rolled it into a video on MTV. It was an edgy, angry song, and its use of harsh language startled many people unused to hearing it from a female singer. Several of the albums other songs also began to get a lot of coverage, and the album itself soared in sales.Â
