My Bar Stool Story

Renovating my pub was definitely a big deal, but for the most part it wasn’t as big deal as it could have been. The counters, the wall decor, the bar itself – everything was pretty easy to decide. Even the tables in the dining area were pretty easy to pick out, because the company was connected to a furniture manufacturer which provided classy furnishing which matched its floors and counters. About the only thing which wasn’t easy to pick was the bar stools.

Real Estate You Call Home

Saturday, June 10th, 2006

This article talks about real estate and the balance between different competing areas of life. This is true especially in the real estate field.
In today’s fast-paced world, many parents find great difficulty in establishing a healthy work/life balance. The demands of the 9 to 5 workday, along with extensive overtime requirements, seldom take into account family responsibilities and demands that are common to most parents. This has lead many parents to pursue more flexible working arrangements, often attempting to start a business from their home, or pursuing work that allows them to schedule their workload and commitments around the demands of family life.

Find out how to balance life with work in our article: Real Estate You Call Home

When it comes to privacy in a large open space, nothing beats the room divider screens. It is just an awesome innovation. This article on room divider screen takes you through my personal experiences with it.

I live in a huge warehouse in Oakland, California. I bought it just a year ago with a whole group of people. Artists, craftspeople, a few wanderers and activists, a motley and spirited crew with a passion for everything, and the ability to agree on nothing. We couldn’t even agree on layout for the warehouse. Read the entire story here.

Panic Room - a good idea or just another hollywood movie theme?

I’m sure by now you all have seen the movie “Panic Room”. What kind of life you must live if you feel you need to have a panic room in your home. In the movie, the panic room is in the townhouse purchased by Foster and her daughter after she and her estranged husband divorce. The townhouse was owned by a deceased millionaire who used the panic room to store a large amount of bonds worth a small fortune, in addition to providing him security against intruders or other threats.

How To Build A Climbing Wall

Saturday, June 10th, 2006

Almost all climbing walls are built on the same general structure.  A frame of 2×4s or, more commonly, 2×6s, is first setup in the general shape the wall should take, usually a stud every three feet or so.  Most climbers build their home walls with a moderate overhang since it provides more training opportunities and harder climbing than vertical walls or slabs.  The stud frame is then faced with ½” or ¾” plywood.  Holes are drilled into the plywood and backed with t-nuts, and then holds are screwed into the front of the wall, anchored by the t-nuts.  The entire wall is usually anchored to wall studs, though if you’re renting an apartment or house you may need to get a little more inventive with a less-permanent anchoring system.

The Many Advantages of Laminate Floors

Friday, June 9th, 2006

Flooring forms the base of all homes. We generally prefer our flooring to look rich and traditional. Hardwood flooring, the most preferred one, is very costly and generally vulnerable to wear and tear. Maintenance is a regular thing, which further adds to the cost of flooring. A solution to this problem was the invention of laminate floorings. Laminate floors are machine made and have a hardwood photographic laminated surface.

How To Buy Baby Shoes

Friday, June 9th, 2006

Of course, I suppose that the function of baby shoes is a little different than those of adult shoes. With baby shoes, there are a few basic things that they need to do. They need to protect the feet, and hold up to crawling around, and possibly a bit of drool. Adult shoes go through much more than this, often miles of walking every day, to say nothing of running, dancing, and various other activities. The fact is, almost any baby shoes will hold up just fine when the baby is young enough, and not yet walking. Therefore, the other function of baby shoes is just to look cute to the parents, and to their friends to whom they will be showing off the baby.

How To Get Rid of Fleas - Flea Infestation Treatment

The History of the Ballpoint Pen!

Thursday, June 8th, 2006

Ballpoint Pen Information

The rights to make and sell ballpoint pens was purchased in 1945 by the Eversharp Company, a company that was already in the writing utensil business with a series of mechanical pencils.  Unfortunately for Eversharp, a Chicago businessman named Milton Reynolds had come across some Biros while in Buenos Aires, and promptly taken them back to America to found the Reynolds International Pen Company, which hit the market with its ballpoint pens first.  In spite of Eversharps rights, it was Reynolds’ ballpoint pen ‘the rocket’ that achieved large scale success in the United States.

Home Renovating - How To Diagnose Central Heating Systems

Thursday, June 8th, 2006

Home heating systems serve a simple purpose. But to achieve it they employ a surprisingly complicated set of components, some of which are prone to failure. Let’s start with the simple and obvious (and cheap!) things first.

If you’re getting no heat at all out the vent, check the pilot light and circuit breakers.

If your system isn’t delivering enough heat, check filters first. Filters gradually become blocked with dust, animal hair, etc. They’re cheap. Don’t bother to wash, which ruins them anyway. Replace.

Check that vents are open and unblocked. Don’t rely only on what you can see from a standing height. For high vents, get out the ladder and shine a flashlight into the vent. For low vents, get down to the cat’s eye level….

Is Home Mortgage Refinancing Worth It?

Wednesday, June 7th, 2006

Is home mortgage refinancing really worth it? Excellent question… since the refinancing process can take upwards of 2-3 months to complete, plus the expenses and hassles of refinancing may outweigh the benefits. Not everyone should refinance just because rates are lower. The general rule of thumb is to consider refinancing if rates are at least 2% lower than your current rate. This is considered a safe margin.

recent studies indicate that often times indoor air pollution is much more concentrated and harmful than pollution outdoors.

Wednesday, June 7th, 2006

Air purification systems work by using the chemical known as ozone to oxidize potential pollutants and kill microorganisms in the air. Though this sounds a little confusing or perhaps even dangerous to anyone not familiar with chemistry, this oxidation process is both natural and safe.

Actually the same ozone oxidation that occurs in an air purification system occurs all around us every day. There are certain levels of ozone in the air even at sea level which oxidize pollutants naturally. Oxygen itself can also oxidize certain chemicals, though it is less effective than ozone.

Epoxy floor coatings

Wednesday, June 7th, 2006

Epoxy floor coatings can be found in garages across the country. These coatings provide enduring protection to cement floors with a shiny finish that is easily recognizable. The floor paint is readily associated with garages and the occasional porch. From time to time epoxy floor coatings can be found in basements, like the basement in my home.

When my husband and I moved into our new home, we knew that we would be challenged with removing odors left behind by the previous owner’s pets.

Air conditioning systems are not necessary for all climates and locations.

Wednesday, June 7th, 2006

An article about air conditioning systems.

For example, they are very rarely used in San Francisco where I live, because the weather is usually mild. Although it can get very hot for a few weeks in the Summer, it is usually not so bad that the expense of owning, maintaining, and running an air conditioning system is warranted. Even in Berkeley and Oakland, which are farther from the water, and so get very hot – sometimes more than a hundred degrees – at some points, there are few air conditioners. I know, because I work in a coffee shop and during the summer it gets hot there!

How clean is the air in your home?

Wednesday, June 7th, 2006

An article about Home Air Filters.

Most people don’t know it, but the air in your house is around three times more polluted than what’s outdoors. If you actually stop to think about this, it makes total sense. Especially during the winter months when we leave our homes shut up tight. Sure we step in and out on a daily basis, but most of that old, stale air remains captured inside our walls. Then we get to breathe it in and out all night long. It sounds pretty bad, huh? Every time someone in your family coughs or sneezes, you then get to breath it all in. Not to mention when someone in your home gets sick and all of those germs are contained inside.

America has certainly conformed to the concept of the home security system.

The skinny on home security systems.

The home security systems available today are pretty nifty. They have sensors that virtually surround your home, allowing you to know if anyone is attempting to break in. There are also single buttons you push to notify different authorities for help, which can be much quicker than calling the police. For individuals who can’t get around well, this is a great security to have. A panic room is even a step further in this process. This will allow you to enter a secured room that cannot be penetrated by intruders. You can’t get much safer than that. You keep supplies inside in case you have to stay in there for days.
