Domestic Violence It’s A Crime
October 28th, 2007Domestic violence happens when a person, partner, family member or ex partner tries to physically or psychologically dominate the other person also known as the victim. Most frequently the term refers to violence between partners, spouses, de facto, non-married intimate partners and or co-habitants. The US Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) sums domestic violence as a cycle or pattern of abusive behavior in all types of relationships to maintain or gain power and control over another partner or person.
Domestic violence or abuse can be physical and ranges from punching, stabbing, threatening violence or death, harming pets, rape, murder, and other unwanted physical contact. Violence as well can be psychological including emotional and mental, verbal, economic, financial and or social control, like controlling the victim’s financial affairs, or not allowing contact with family, friends or monitoring and controlling the person’s social movements. Usually the victim in these types of situations find themselves feeling totally isolated from family, friends and the outside world due to the fear they have of the partner who in this case is the perpetrator.
