Two nutrients are important for seniors to help maintain their cognitive function. These nutrients are folate and vitamin B12 and help maintain healthy nerves and blood cells. A study from Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University (USDA HNRCA) reports the seniors that have adequate vitamin B12 and Folate levels performed better on cognitive tests. Those seniors who had low levels of vitamin B12 had more occurrences of cognitive impairments. The study was first published in the January issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Martha Savaria Morris, PhD, researcher and epidemiologist at the USDA HNRCA said, “we found a strong relationship between high folate status and good cognitive function among people 60 and older who also had adequate levels of vitamin B12.” .

Zale discloses agreement with former CFO

Jewelry retailer Zale Corp. said Tuesday that it has agreed to pay former Chief Financial Officer Mark R. Lenz nine months of salary and cash for his retirement benefits. The company said the salary payments, which are for the nine months that began Feb. 1, 2007, would total $207,188 and the cash representing vested retirement benefits would be another $116,000. He will also receive medical and other benefits through April, the company said in a regulatory filing. Zale, the nation’s largest jewelry store operator, placed Lenz on administrative leave in May after outside auditors determined that he hadn’t properly disclosed delayed vendor payments worth $8.2 million last summer. The Globe and Mail reported Saturday thats on top of the 200 additional workers hired by Passport Canada three months ago. The Winnipeg passport office saw a 23 per cent increase in applications from 11,427 in December to 14,155 in January, said Francine Charbonneau of Passport Canada.
